A word worth deleting.

If you had to give up one word that you use regularly, what would it be?

“Umm…” is one of many filler words I’ll challenge myself to permanently delete from my vocabulary! It may take time since it’s been part of my lingo for so long. I thought “umm…” was a made up word. Today, I learned that it’s actually in the Collins Dictionary. It’s means, “to express doubt or uncertainty” or “to fill a pause when hesitating in speaking”. While this may be true, there’s no need to announce the freeze while gathering my thoughts. Ha!

Why not embrace silence?

SILENCE IS WISDOM

We’ve all had those moments of discomfort when the pressure is on to “get to the point”. I observed that it actually takes me longer to “get to the point” when feeling and talking at the same time. Love says, stop, think and choose!

Oop! Oh my!

Taking a few seconds to think and respond instead of voicing “umm” to a gazillion ideas flying through my head won’t hurt nobody. I’m happy to start practicing a “pause for the cause”! If you”umm” a lot too, let’s “shhh…” together. 😂! #challenge

GEMS FROM THE GOOD BOOK

Proverbs 17:28  says, “Even a fool, when he holdeth his peace, is counted wise: and he that shutteth his lips is esteemed a man of understanding.” James 1:19  says “… let every man be swift to hear, slow to speak, slow to wrath”. I sense this includes being “swift to hear” and assess our own thoughts within before airing them. It also encourages actively listening to others.

The Holy Spirit reminded me of a TED Talk I watched a while back. It taught about the power of intentional silence and it’s impact in communication. Silence is a deliberate discipline. Silence matures with trust, acceptance and understanding of ourselves and others. Silence is a necessary component that supports the impact and resonance our words. Every day, we’re on our way to growing and glowing! Practice makes perfect. What’s your filler word?

1. A pause helps us find the truth in us to give voice what to matters.

2. A moment of silence to listen and think carefully before speaking is love and respect for ourselves and others.

3. With patience, “umm” will become chosen words worth saying.

Cheers to great prompts! This one had my wheels turning!
