“Love’s antidote for moments of uncertainty.”

Bright and early, I wrestled. After completing a small part of a much larger undertaking, doubt crept in. I wondered if I dipped my toes in shark infested waters. I pondered if the dreams I strongly sensed were real or delusions of ridden deception.

Just when I was about to toss everything, the Holy Spirit soared into my heart with water for my drying branch. While prepping coffee I heard,

“Trust in the Lord with all your heart, lean not on your own understanding, in all your ways acknowledge him and he will direct your path”.

-Proverbs 3:5-6

Seconds from pressing delete, the parable of the talents in Matthew 25:14-30 came to mind. When discomfort passed, I realized that I was about to trash a mission God blessed in the infant stage. The Holy Spirit helped me discern that my mindset began to resemble the servant with one talent.

After reading the parable, I cringed. I perceived the master’s words to be harsh. Immediately, the Holy Spirit said:

without faith it is impossible to please God

they that come to God must believe that he is and that he is a rewarder of them that diligently seek him” (Hebrews 11:6)

Talent” in Matthew 25:14-30 is defined as “a balance; that which is weighed”. Talent was used to describe silver and gold in ancient days for investment or exchange. “Talent” also symbolizes gifts, skills, anointing and callings.

The Greek word for doubt is “distázō” . It means, “I waver”, “double stance”, “going two ways, shifting between positions”, “to “vacillate (waver)”. The Bible says “a double minded man is unstable in all his ways” (James 1:8). I can testify of the cycles of insecurity and stagnancy that wavering brings. I learned that . indecisiveness is a trauma response. May God grace us to become singleminded in faith in whatever we’re purposed to share and achieve in this lifetime.

When we rely solely on what we perceive to be “personal strengths” or material substance in the moment, we lose sight of faith. When fear takes over, ideas if lack or limitations cause us to forget what can be achieved undergirded by God’s infinite power, provision & strength. In panic, we sacrifice nurturing our gifts for emotional, instant gratification.

Jesus said , “a kingdom divided against itself cannot stand” (Matthew 12:25), “all things are possible to him that believes” (Mark 9:23), and “Lo, I am with you always”(Matthew 28:20). Matthew 14:22-31 shares how Peter defied the laws of nature when his eyes were solely fixed on Jesus. The moment Peter shifted his focus to observe his environment, doubt crept in. Uncertainty seized what he was actively performing in faith.

Jesus came to gift us abundant life, confidence, courage and peace; here and now. Romans 8:28 says, “all things work together for good to those who love God, to those who are the called according to His purpose”.

Instead of succumbing to doubt, we can overcome by discovering, speaking and reinforcing what God said pertaining to our struggles. Instead of allowing doubt to destabilize us, may drive us to the throne of grace to strengthened and reassured of who we are and whose we are. In Jesus name, Amen.
